Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
