Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
