The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
