The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
